Fitchburg Railroad Station (first) opens.

August 9, 1848

Architect: George Dexter. Originally Fitchburg Depot, it is located on Causeway Street. The castle-like building includes the second-floor Depot Hall, the largest auditorium in New England at the time, with a capacity of 4,000 people. Jenny Lind performs there in 1850.* Damaged by a fire on January 17, 1925, the building is demolished in 1926.
